{"id":282,"date":"2017-07-11T00:15:36","date_gmt":"2017-07-11T06:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/wordpress\/?p=282"},"modified":"2025-08-08T04:02:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T10:02:18","slug":"gerry-brissette-mattachine-momentum-misgivings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/11\/gerry-brissette-mattachine-momentum-misgivings\/","title":{"rendered":"Gerry Brissette: Mattachine Momentum, Misgivings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tangentgroup.org\/gerry-brissette-profile\/\">A profile of Gerry Brissette<\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Gerard \u201cGerry\u201d Brissette (November 12, 1926\u2013September 20, 1980) almost singlehandedly organized what we now know as the Mattachine Society in the San Francisco Bay Area.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With his&nbsp;direction, facilitation, and participation the organization in Northern California&nbsp;grew from a virtually useless mailing list in mid-February 1953 to being active enough to send delegates to the Mattachine\u2019s constitutional convention in April and May of that year. Nearly as quickly, following the conventions, Brissette became disillusioned with the organization\u2019s trajectory and fell away. Due to a series of letters between Brissette and Mattachine cofounder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tangentgroup.org\/chuck-rowland-profile\/\">Chuck Rowland<\/a>&nbsp;in 1953, we are privy both to Brissette\u2019s early biography as well as his motivations and challenges in building the organization in San Francisco and the East Bay. A 1976 interview of Brissette conducted by historian John D\u2019Emilio aids in the latter regard as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tangentgroup.org\/gerry-brissette-profile\/\">This profile of Gerry Brissette<\/a> is adapted from my work-in-progress with the working title&nbsp;<\/em>The Feeble Strength of&nbsp;One: Bob Hull, Chuck Rowland, Maxey, Marx and the Mattachine<em>.
