I saw the 1990 film adaptation\u2014if one can compress a 547-page tome into a 105-minute film.<span id='easy-footnote-1-9721' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/2025\/01\/17\/sor-juana-inquisitional-minds-want-to-know\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-9721' title='&lt;em&gt;Yo, la peor de todas&lt;\/em&gt;, directed by Mar\u00eda Luisa Bemberg (1922\u20131995), Argentina, 1990.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> The IMDB pr\u00e9cis is precise: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">A 17th-century Mexican nun defies expectations, becoming a renowned intellectual and writer during the Spanish Inquisition. Her progressive ideas attract unwanted attention, forcing her to seek protection from an influential ally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>I watched it again tonight via Kanopy and it comes off both unsubtle and sly. Sor Juana is portrayed as conforming, confident, conceited, condemned. She is, according to Paz&#8217;s publisher, &#8220;the most striking figure in all of Spanish-American colonial literature and one of the great poets of her age.&#8221;<span id='easy-footnote-2-9721' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/2025\/01\/17\/sor-juana-inquisitional-minds-want-to-know\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-9721' title='Quoted from the dust jacket; Octavio Paz, &lt;em&gt;Sor Juana, or, The Traps of Faith&lt;\/em&gt;, Cambridge, Mass.: Belknap Press, 1988.'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I went back to the film because I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kunc.org\/podcast\/inthenoco\/2025-01-16\/how-two-latin-american-baroque-concerts-in-denver-highlight-some-surprising-musical-history\">heard today<\/a> on a local NPR station that two concerts this weekend by the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado will present Sor Juana&#8217;s musical work, of which I was unaware. Unaware for good reason because the music that accompanied the Sister&#8217;s words is lost, being imagined by other composers.
