{"id":9916,"date":"2025-06-23T00:16:29","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T06:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/?p=9916"},"modified":"2025-07-05T04:52:06","modified_gmt":"2025-07-05T10:52:06","slug":"oh-equality-up-yours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/2025\/06\/23\/oh-equality-up-yours\/","title":{"rendered":"Oh, Equality, up yours!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">\u2014with apologies to <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/FQ2QyCXHUyw?si=lam41bmme00jnYmS\">Poly Styrene<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eleven years ago, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.againstequality.org\">Against Equality<\/a> (AE) collective published a compilation of its three anthologies, critical of myopic topics of &#8220;gay pride.&#8221;<span id='easy-footnote-1-9916' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/2025\/06\/23\/oh-equality-up-yours\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-9916' title='&lt;em&gt;Against Equality: Queer Revolution, Not Mere Inclusion&lt;\/em&gt;, Ryan Conrad (ed.), Edinburg, Oakland, Baltimore: AK Press, 2014.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> As writers for AE note in the collection&#8217;s introduction, the day before SCOTUS trashed the Defense of Marriage Act (the ban on gay marriage signed by Bill Clinton) and California&#8217;s Prop 8 (the people&#8217;s ban on gay marriage), in 2013, the Justices had trashed the 1965 Voting Rights Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Two years before the SCOTUS derangement, my wife <a href=\"https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/author\/andreacarney\/\">Andrea Carney<\/a> and I had attended a local reading and signing by author Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore because in October 2010 we&#8217;d seen her go face to face with anti-Don&#8217;t Ask Don&#8217;t Tell soldier Dan Choi on <em>Democracy Now!<\/em> Sycamore argued that with the repeal of DADT (it would be repealed in September 2011), gay people would be free to be sucked into the sorts of crazy conflicts that Choi was involved in, namely the Iraq war. Sycamore saw the issue in moral terms while Choi was more pragmatic, as seen below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/embed\/story\/2010\/10\/22\/does_opposing_dont_ask_dont_tell\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>And so AE in turn critiques both the repeal of DADT as well as enactment of the DREAM Act; the former as outlined above and the latter because it potentially sucks immigrants into an imperialist fighting force. (As I took a break from writing these words, a DW newscast told me of Trump bombing Iran. What a bold, new opportunity for immigrants and gays to involve themselves in.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That these topics might be debatable could be news to some, but to my mind AE sees hypocrisy (giving marriage with one hand, taking votes with the other) as the road to inquiry (how heteronormativity can be a double-edged sword).<span id='easy-footnote-2-9916' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/2025\/06\/23\/oh-equality-up-yours\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-9916' title='From AE&amp;#8217;s &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/www.againstequality.org&quot;&gt;home page&lt;\/a&gt;: &amp;#8220;As queer thinkers, writers and artists, we are committed to dislodging the centrality of equality rhetoric and challenging the demand for inclusion in the institution of marriage, the US military, and the prison industrial complex via hate crimes legislation.&amp;#8221; See my earlier mention of AE in my introduction to &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/2019\/07\/02\/stonewall-the-great-gay-migration-and-the-monumental-divide\/&quot;&gt;Stonewall, the Great Gay Migration and the Monumental Divide&lt;\/a&gt;.'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> That&#8217;s a topic for another post, but it does inform what I ran into during this Pride Month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hidden Cameras<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest output by Canadian Joel Gibb, aka The Hidden Cameras, was pushed my way the other day by YouTube. Titled &#8220;How do you love?&#8221; the video features a mirrored split-screen of Gibb, now living in Berlin, taking sleek transports in a white A-shirt and pleated pants to a soundtrack that is EDM and forgettable. The lyrics are melancholic, mourning a liaison of mixed messages with a blank verse that I would find in several of the Cameras&#8217; works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Hidden Cameras - How do you love? (Official Video)\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bAk051cYR1M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>How do you remix?<\/strong> &#8220;How do you love?&#8221; and additional new tracks are being reworked by Pet Shop Boys (with whom Gibb worked in 2012) and Vince Clarke, among others.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Because I had watched this video, YouTube sent me a promo of &#8220;Ban Marriage&#8221; from 2003, the same year Gibb&#8217;s provinces began legalizing same-sex unions. But this is no slick political tract. Its lilting melodies\u2014labeled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/the-hidden-cameras-joel-gibb-is-a-little-bit-country-a-little-bit-gay-folk-church-music\/\">gay folk church music<\/a>\u201d\u2014may belie somewhat its subjects: urination (turned to ice in the bitter cold, reflected in the yellow vinyl of this reissue), animals as cannibals, restroom stall sex and the soiled carpet of a peep show arcade, the shame and thrill of adulterous, closeted trysts, the legendary tongues of the damned, what men do with men &#8220;in the army or in the klan.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then there is a holy visit sent by God: golden flowers, honey, and\u2014well, this is a band whose original label was called Evil Evil\u2014disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m reminded of the Irish band Fatima Mansions and their motto &#8220;Keep Music Evil, Please.&#8221;<span id='easy-footnote-3-9916' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/2025\/06\/23\/oh-equality-up-yours\/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-9916' title='The motto is found in the CD booklet for &lt;em&gt;Viva Dead Ponies&lt;\/em&gt;, Radioactive Records, 1991.'><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> They could sing the tenderest of tunes and then devolve a future R.E.M. chestnut into an announcer&#8217;s voiceover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"3. Shiny Happy People\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AcU7hJGUfl4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m further reminded that the Mansions titled an earlier EP <em>The Only Solution: Another Revolution<\/em>.<span id='easy-footnote-4-9916' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/2025\/06\/23\/oh-equality-up-yours\/#easy-footnote-bottom-4-9916' title='&lt;em&gt;The Only Solution: Another Revolution&lt;\/em&gt;, Radioactive Records, 1991.'><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> As I <a href=\"https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/02\/the-summer-of-our-discontent\/\">wrote<\/a> six years ago,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Shortly after Stonewall in the summer of \u201969 [writer John] Lauritsen attended a meeting of gay people who were debating whether to align with the antiwar movement, with which John had been involved since 1965. He and the other radicals at the meeting carried the day and so the group eventually was dubbed Gay Liberation Front, a nod to the National Liberation Front\u2014aka Viet Cong\u2014of Vietnam. This is an example of the overlap I always saw as perfectly natural. As a kid I organized against the war in high school and and also wrote a book report on James Baldwin\u2019s <em>Another Country<\/em>.<span id='easy-footnote-5-9916' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/qualityofmercy.com\/blog\/2025\/06\/23\/oh-equality-up-yours\/#easy-footnote-bottom-5-9916' title='A couple of years later I would find all of Baldwin\u2019s books on the shelves of my future wife Andrea Carney. Years after that we became acquainted with Stan Weir, who had worked and dialogued with Baldwin.
