420 Shot in 72 Hours: BFD

CNN News Item, May 10, 2021: According to the Gun Violence Archive, at least 117 people were killed and 303 wounded in shootings across the country over 72 hours this past weekend.

I’m tired of hearing about gun violence in the United States. White middle-class kids complaining about being fearful, complaining about the kind of duck-and-cover exercises I went through as a kid in the ’60s. Complaining that their friends got killed. Complaining about survivor’s guilt. Get over it. Get. Real.

Each and every one of us should have survivor’s guilt. We’ve exported violence around the globe for forever. We kill people at will, at whim. We invade countries, occupy them, and are shocked when their radical elements recruit their citizens, kidnap them, terrorize them, and kill them in the course of killing us.

Can we ever make the connection between the French Resistance and Osama bin Laden who, five years before 9/11, issued a fatwā against the desecration of Saudi Arabia by the U.S. titled “Declaration of War against the Americans Occupying the Land of the Two Holy Places”? France declared war on Germany in 1939 and an armistice the next year left France partially occupied.

Perhaps Osama bin Laden wanted his homeland to be spared that fate.

Our military is armed to the teeth. Our citizens are armed to the teeth. Four hundred and twenty shootings in seventy-two hours is the price of our freedom, obtained by our actions. Get over it. Get. Real.

  1. Great, David!
Good to hear the connection with our country’s history of eliminating people. I like to start with the genocide of the Native Americans.
